Chamber Chat with Brendan Hughes
As the ward councillor for Poulton, I recently attended a regeneration meeting at the town hall. I was pleased to get an update on Morecambe town centre`s regeneration and new `wayfinding‘ plans.
I think the town centre works in Morecambe are fantastic and are a long overdue improvement to the look and feel of the place. This is only phase one, and there are some exciting plans for the update of the new town square and the moving of the Morecambe mosaic, which has for a long time been the victim of bikes, kids and skateboards using it as a play area; that said, it has weathered remarkably well.
The fantastic news about the positive Morecambe BID `yes‘ vote can only help with these plans. Morecambe is set to see a lot of investment into the town centre over the coming months and years. The exciting plans for the new trampoline park on the back of Pleasureland are expected soon, as well. We are also expecting to hear an announcement from Opus North shortly about the Frontierland development. I am personally hoping this will be the announcement of the start date and wait with bated breath.
Plans are also going in for the new Burger King development in The Arndale Centre, this has been met with mixed emotion by the owners of the long-standing Welcome Café, which, thankfully has been relocated to the old Victoria pub on Victoria St.
I think with all the regeneration plans that are underway and the regeneration of Queen and Pedder St in the pipeline, the town centre is at the start of a long journey to change.
Remember Morecambe BID are holding an open event on 6th July, 6 pm at The Midland, for businesses to get involved before its official start in October.
